Study Shows Link between Periodontitis and Pancreatic Cancer

According to researchers in Finland, the bacteria that cause periodontitis seems to play a part also in the onset of pancreatic cancer.  In an article in Science Daily, this research is viewed as a breakthrough in the fight against cancer and the potential start of the deadly disease. “

The study, published in the British Journal of Cancer, has for the first time proven the existence of a mechanism on the molecular level through which the bacteria associated with periodontitis, Treponema denticola (Td), may also have an effect on the onset of cancer. Researchers found that the primary virulence factor of the Td bacteria, the Td-CTLP proteinase (an enzyme), occurs also in malignant tumours of the gastrointestinal tract, for example, in pancreatic cancer,” the article said.
