Dr. William M. Hang

D.D.S, M.S.D.

Dr. Hang moved to Southern California and developed a truly
unique orthodontic practice with strong emphasis on facial
esthetics achieved with innovative early treatment and adult
treatment. Almost 30 years ago he realized his treatments were
often opening the airway - as seen on a lateral head X-rays. This
opened up a whole new aspect of orthodontics - maximizing
the airway for ALL orthodontic patients and specifically
treating patients with SDB (sleep disordered breathing) or
OSA (obstructive sleep apnea). Airway size is not diagnostic,
however, statistically there is a correlation in airway size and
OSA. Volumetric as seen with a 3D scan is helpful and critical in
determining where the obstruction is most likely occurring.

In 1989 Dr. Hang began re-opening previous orthodontic
extraction spaces for patients who dis-liked the esthetics and
functional issues brought on by retraction. He identified this as
a new syndrome - the Extraction Retraction Regret Syndrome™
or E.R.R.S.™. A CBCT is critical in determining that the spaces are
sufficient for implants to replace the previously extracted teeth.

Dr. Hang has spoken on orthodontics, facial esthetics and airway
locally, nationally, and internationally and appeared on the British
equivalent of “Sixty Minutes.” He also teaches other professionals
various techniques to enhance facial esthetics and airway health.
Dr. Hang was the Founding President of the North American
Association of Facial Orthotropics®, is a board member of the
American Association of Physiological Medicine and Dentistry,
and is an advisor to the Academy of Orofacial Myofunctional
Therapy.
